Internals of a Role Center page
At Directions 2009 in Austin, TX in Novenber, Jakob Nielsen of Microsoft and I gave a presentation entitled, “Making the Role Center work for you”. Our goal was to provide information on how Role Center pages are structured, how existing RC pages might be modified or new RC pages created. Our presentation was only an hour long, so we didn’t try to explain how to do the analysis or design work that should be done prior to the development tasks.
It was a great pleasure and privelge for me to work with Jakob on this presentation. He has been responsible for managing most of the design work for the Role Tailored Client approach for the Dynamics products for the last several years.
Role Center pages are complex in the sense that there are a lot of pieces located in a lot of places. Even so, each of the pieces is relatively simple. The key is knowing what all the pieces are and understanding what pupose each piece serves in terms of presenting information and options to the user.
We promised at the end of that presentation to make our notes and slides avaiable to anyone who is interested. Both the demo script and the slide deck are available for download from this blog. The demo script walks through many of the components of a Role Center page, showing most of the places where you might add or change the object connections (displays and actions) available to the user. The slides provide an overview of the presentation content.

NAV at Liberty!
Welcome to Liberty Grove Software’s blog about items of interest to the Microsoft Dynamics NAV community – NAV at Liberty.
Because LGS focuses totally on projects involving NAV, that’s the kind of information we want to share with you. We will share information from our research into NAV features, tips about how things work – or don’t. We will provide design hints, programming tips and, sometimes, just general information about things NAV.
This blog will not cover everything, but it might cover anything. We have no schedule for posting, but hope to have something to offer regularly. It will not be structured or organized in any particular way. It’s here only because we are dedicated to NAV and like to share bits of information we think might be useful to others.
If there’s something in our blog that you have a question about, ask. If there’s something wrong, tell us and we’ll correct it. If you discover something interesting in NAV and want to share it with us and others, let us know. If we agree that it fits our mission here, we’ll pass it on. If there’s something else you would like to see, let us know and, if we can, we’ll cover it. We hope you enjoy reading our blogs as much as we will enjoy researching and writing them.
NAV Long and Prosper!
